I talked to someone today. well, over MSN that is. its been a while since i had contact with this person. felt kinda apprehensive..after all that had been said and done between us.

the conversation started relatively formally. and ended that way too.

we talked about each other's friends and family like hey so whats this person doing, your sister still studying, your mum still working there,so you still working at this place, hows work..

its weird cos you like knew this person inside out,left,right,centre,front and back just a few years back.

but it was nice talking to the person. like after so long.

Had my first official break since starting work 5 months ago. It lasted only one night. maybe next time, we'll have more time.

Yes.Sentosa.that's a break..for now, I only have time to be away for a day or two max.

We were lucky in that this fella decided to show off a little bit when we arrived at our resort.Then went to take a dip in the sea.We had dinner. The fish and chips was the best she had-according to her. And spent quite a bit on drinks. But the sunset and excellent company made it all worth it.

Good food. Money can buy. $18 fish n chips. $13 hot dog. $12 beer. $15 cosmopolitan.

Great view. Money can buy. $3 admission and bus ride into Sentosa.

Excellent companionship. Something that money can't buy.

Why first-borns have higher IQs?

According to new research your older brother or sister really is smarter than you.

The new Dutch study shows that birth order affects intelligence, making the first-born the smartest, while a long list of other studies link personality, weight gain and even premature death to where you're positioned in the family lineage.

Here are some of the theories linked to birth order:

Intelligence
A number of studies have been conducted that suggest IQ scores decline according to birth order. Why this is the case still isn't clear, but a popular theory is that the extra one-on-one time, attention and patience parents give their first-borns, compared to children arriving later, gives them a intellectual head start.

Personality
A study from the University of California suggests first-borns are the achievers, more dominant, religious, conscientious and neurotic. They also earn more, are more responsible, anxious and organised, and they tend to stick to the rules.

Middle-borns on the other hand are rebellious, impulsive and open to new experiences. They perform more poorly academically and often procrastinate, but they are also the peacemakers.

And the lucky last-borns are the family favourite — they're often the joker, are warm, sociable, extrovert and creative. They are also the most likely to question authority.

Mortality
Later-borns are more likely to die prematurely. One possible explanation is that later-borns are also the bigger risk takers and that their adventurousness may at times put them in harm's way.

Eczema and asthma
Research shows that later-borns have a reduced risk of suffering from common childhood illnesses like eczema and asthma. One theory is that younger children are exposed to a wider range of infections by their older siblings and therefore have strengthened immune systems.

Sexual partners
Later-borns often have more sexual partners than first-borns. According to researchers, this finding suggests first-borns are more interested in finding a long-term mate, which is a reflection of the fact that they want to uphold the values of their parents, while the later-borns are more rebellious.

Weight
Later-borns are less likely to be overweight. It's not clear why this is, but one theory is that over-protection and over-feeding of the first-born may lead to obesity.

My exams are coming soon. I get stressed when its time to start studying; when's its time to have started studying yesterday,last week,last month... And every year, I destress by doing something i wouldn't normally do. Things that are gayish... Last year, i remember doing lots of gardening in my garden. I mowed the lawn, trimming the leaves, planted seeds etc.
This year, I am into 'art'. I basically am not naturally artistically inclined. But i try drawing. And it gives me satisfaction. And it keeps my mind off the stress of the impending exams. And to be honest, I don't draw 'original' stuff. I draw from photographs. Is that still art? Anyway, here are some of the stuff i drew over the week. I don't think they're nice; no-i'm not being humble. But if anyone thinks they're nice, then a big thank you. Anyway, my opinion of drawing/art is that it gives the artist great satisfaction.I drew this picture from a photograph i took in Krabi back in 2005. Its still one of my favourites pictures. Nigel and Nich might remember this sunset on Koh Lanta. Unforgettable, eh?
I had fun trying to blend in the colours using pencils to replicate the evening sky.This was from a picture of an owl from a magazine. Owls are difficult to draw!! Especially this one as it was white. Its really hard to colour in white and to give such an object texture. I kinda gave up on this picture so i took like only half an hour to finish it. Its horrid i think but nevertheless, an attempt.

This next one was a daring adventure-fuelled by love. okok too dramatic. Portraits are fucking difficult to do can. Seriously, hats off to portrait artists. And to Kat from LA Ink who does god-amazing tatoo portraits. Anyway, yeah i spent some time on this. A nose is hard to draw! I think it doesn't really look like Shruthi-because her lips have been seriously pseudo-bashed in! And her face is not ovalish enough. And her eyes are too far part(according to her) but i think somehow, she doesn't really mind.

Flowers are gayyy. But i'm proud of my drawing here. Its the latest i drew and maybe, all the practice is paying off? But i'm gonna go back to studying and worrying about exams for now. Anyway, i hope to enrol in adult art classes when i start working. And maybe in the near future, i'll have my own scene from Ghost-except i'll be getting dirty with a paint brush.

It was nice meeting Shruthi's sister. She's really lively and outspoken. Shruthi-your sister and you are very different yet, you share this closeness that i envy because i never had this special bond with my siblings. Anyway, she's very nice and she didn't eat me up. And it'd be nicer if she decided to stay here and work.

And it was fantastic meeting Merv today and catching up with him. Merv-hang in there dude..its time very soon for us to reap what we've sown. There's light at the end of the tunnel and one day, we'll look back at our hardships and realise that they only made us stronger.

I think i have possibly torn/seriously injured my ankle ligament. crap. i need to play floorball.

I am binge-eating at home. I am getting fat. Not good. I need to motivate myself.

I am broke. Temporarily. crap.

I need to plunge into my notes and school work or it'll be too late..argghh..

One day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her.
Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry.He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was those chills which only fear can put in you. He said, "I'm here to help you, ma'am. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson."Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt.
As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid. Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a jobto him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, "And think of me." He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight.
A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, onethat even being on her feet for the whole day couldn't erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan ..
After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something written on the napkin.There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: "You don't owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped meout, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here iswhat you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you."Under the napkin were four more $100 bills.Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day.
That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard....She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, "Everything' s going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson."

Gift giving has long been a favourite subject for studies on human behaviour, with psychologists, anthropologists, economists and marketers all weighing in.
They have found that the giving of gifts is a surprisingly complex and important part of human interaction, helping to define relationships and strengthen bonds with family and friends.
Indeed, psychologists say it is often the giver, rather than the recipient, who reaps the biggest psychological gains from a gift.

Frustrated by crowds, traffic and commercialism, people can be tempted at this time of year to opt out of gift giving altogether. But while it's reasonable to cut back on spending during the holidays, psychologists say that banning the gift exchange with loved ones is not the best solution.
People who refuse to accept or exchange gifts during the holidays, these experts say, may be missing out on an important connection with family and friends.
Joy of engaging
'That doesn't do a service to the relationship,' said Harvard psychology professor Ellen J. Langer.
'If I don't let you give me a gift, then I'm not encouraging you to think about me and about things I like.
'I am preventing you from experiencing the joy of engaging in all those activities. You do people a disservice by not giving them the gift of giving.'
The social value of giving has been recognised throughout human history.
For thousands of years, some native cultures have engaged in the potlatch, a complex ceremony that celebrates extreme giving.
Although cultural interpretations vary, the status of a given family in a clan or village was often dictated not by who had the most possessions, but instead by who gave away the most.
The more lavish and bankrupting the potlatch, the more prestige was gained by the host family.
Some researchers believe evolutionary forces may have favoured gift giving. Men who were the most generous may have had the most reproductive success with women. (Notably, the use of food in exchange for sexual access and grooming has been documented in our closest ape relative, the chimpanzee.)
Women who were skilled at giving - be it extra food or a well-fitted pelt - helped sustain the family provider as well as her children.
Consumer psychologist Margaret Rucker at the University of California, Davis, says men are typically more price-conscious and practical when it comes to the gifts they give and get, while women tend to be more concerned about giving and receiving gifts with emotional significance.
Dr Rucker says she often recounts the story of a man who climbed a tree to retrieve a robin's egg that matched his girlfriend's blue eyes.
'Women say, 'Oh, how romantic,'' she said. 'But men say, 'That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of, and also what about the mama bird?''
Gender differences in gift giving seem to emerge early in life. Researchers at Loyola University Chicago studied three- and four-year-olds at a day-care centre, all of whom had attended the same birthday party.
The girls typically went shopping with their mothers and helped select and wrap the gift. Boys, meanwhile, were often unaware of what the gift was.
'They'd say, 'I took a nap while my mum went shopping for it,'' said MsMary Ann McGrath, the associate dean of the Graduate School of Business at Loyola.
Showing interest
Gift giving is often the most obvious way a partner can show interest, strengthen a bond or even signal that a relationship should end.
One colleague of Dr Rucker's noted that she knew her marriage was over when her husband handed her a gift in a brown grocery bag.
People who stop giving gifts lose out on important social cues, researchers say. 'Who is on your gift list is telling you who is important in your life,' Dr McGrath says. 'It says who is more important and who is less important.'
But the biggest effect of gift giving may be on ourselves. Giving to others reinforces our feelings for them and makes us feel effective and caring, Prof Langer says.
For a glimpse into the psychology of giving, researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University recently studied gift giving by pet owners, finding that it stemmed from a desire to make pets happy and offer gifts that would improve a pet's comfort and care.
The research, to be published next year, may seem frivolous, but it also gives an insight into the self-serving nature of giving since pets can't reciprocate, the researchers note.
'When you're giving to another person, you have this pressure of reciprocity, but it's not there with a pet,' said Professor Tracy Ryan, an associate professor of advertising research at Virginia Commonwealth. 'It shows that a lot of the pleasure is in the giving, knowing you've taken care of someone.'

Shisha smoking a major health risk

ABU DHABI — Numerous cafes and restaurants serving shisha (hubble-bubble) have become a disturbing feature of most residential areas across the emirates and pose a menace due to noise and air pollution.

What is really serious about the phenomenon is that most shisha smokers wrongfully take to the hubble-bubble thinking that it poses only 'light' health risks compared to the serious health related complications of cigarette smoking.

Medical experts have warned that shisha has a more perilous impact on health compared to cigarette smoking. They say most shisha smokers have a misconception based on a wrongful and unscientific notion that tobacco used in shisha is herbal and does not affect body organs.
Residents of buildings with coffee shops and snack counters that serve shisha expressed their resentment over the outlets for the multiple problems they cause them. They called upon the authorities concerned to adopt certain measures to control spread of shisha outlets in the country.

It is to be noted that in their efforts to combat smoking, the health ministers of the GCC states have proposed a hike in the fees of commercial licence issued for cafes and restaurants serving shisha in the member countries. Despite several steps taken by the country to control the spread of tobacco, the UAE is considered among the world's leading consumers of tobacco.

Medical experts have also cautioned that one of the hazards of smoking shisha is lung cancer.
"Most people misleadingly believe shisha does not contain tobacco and that when they smoke they inhale herbal products. It is the added flavours that make them feel they are smoking herbs, while they are actually taking in tobacco and are highly likely to become addicted to nicotine. Shisha smokers should realise that it is far more dangerous than cigarette smoking because the amount of nicotine in shisha can not be measured due to packing differences," a doctor in the government sector warned.

Moreover, while smoking hubble-bubble the aluminium foil, which is usually of poor quality, reacts with the burning charcoal and produces aluminium fumes that are carcinogenic or in other words causes cancer, he said.

He clarified that the amount of carbon dioxide inhaled through shisha is very high compared to cigarette smoking, adding that one shisha smoke is equal to seven or 10 cigarettes depending on the packed ingredients.

He stressed shisha smokers should also be aware of the fact that when smoke goes through water humidity in smoke increases and it then tends to stay for a longer time in the lungs. Some germs, mainly bacteria that cause tuberculosis, live in the shisha pipe.

"According to recent studies the pipe could act as a good medium for conveying bacteria causing infectious diseases like Hepatitis A that can be easily transmitted when shisha pipe is used by multiple smokers," apprised the medical expert.

Yesterday, i went to the coolest(literally cos its air conditioned) shisha place ever. I didn't know there was a 2nd floor at Al Majlis. And i got into an argument with Shruthi cos of this cos she insisted her friends were waiting at the 2nd floor of al majlis and i said 'what the hell they probably mean al tazzaq' and i thought 'stupid girls don't even know their shisha places' then she called me 'irritating' and i said 'fine screw you i'm goin home'. then i realised my mistake. so yeah sorry it was my fault. I'M SORRY OK.

Anyway,this 2nd floor place of Ml majlis is like very comfortable. and the deco is nice. and u can smoke your shisha in air conditioning. very nice, dudes.

i got tired of my blog template. then i was too lazy to go look for a nicely designed one. so i took one of the standard blog templates. and changed the colours abit. this is my real madrid black and green jersey inspired theme. something like that. the jersey's quite nice. but i'm not a real madrid fan in case any of you are thinking of getting me that jersey as a present. SOON. but i guess my blog looks plain now. but who cares.

Quarter Life Crisis

My lifestyle has changed dramatically over the last 3 weeks. I now take take public transport. I haven't been home in 3 weeks. I now live in Little India at a shop house, helping to run a backpackers' hostel.

Its been tiring sometimes. Having to be here for long periods, checking in and out people, changing sheets, doing laundry, cleaning out the rooms-the basic house keeping stuff.

I get to meet people from all over the world- Sweden, England, Germany, Spain, France, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Czech Republic, Australia and England just to name a few countries that our visitors come from. While it's interesting to hear about how they've been away from home for a year, travelling around the world, i always wish i was in their shoes. I'm hitting 25, haven't finished school, haven't gotten a job and have been to like what 5 countries all my life?

Ok, i'll stop whining about it now. And due to popular requests, i'll update mpre often with mushy pics of my gf and I spending whatever little time we have to spend with each other going places. So yes, Nicholas, Razak and Fahm- I'll update soon.

Singapore to Host F1 Raceby Kok Sah KerPlans are underway for Singapore to host one round of the Formula One World Championship next year. The second most-widely watched sport in the world behind football, Formula One racing would be able to make a stopover here in between the Australian and Malaysian Grands Prix.
“Singapore aims to be a global hub for everything,” said a spokesman from the Economic Development Board. “Why not Formula One? Besides, as the Government is aware, there is important revenue to be collected from car owners, whether they own a Toyota Starlet or a McLaren-Mercedes F1 car.”
“Malaysia took in US$200 (S$349) million for the 1999 Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang,” said the spokesman. “Our research department estimates that to be a lot of money.”However, unlike Malaysia, which invested RM286 (S$131) million in building a world-class racing circuit at Sepang which is the envy of the world, Singapore will make use of existing streets to form a circuit. “Who needs a world-class racing track when you have a world-class transport system like ours?” sniffed Mr Boh Oh Tak, a Land Transport Authority spokesman.
He revealed that every effort would be made to ensure that the Singapore Grand Prix is a truly Singaporean event. The proposed race could flag off at Tanglin Road, taking the F1 cars through a scenic course along Orchard Road, Grange Road and back to Tanglin Road to complete the lap.As expected, there are major planning concerns involved.
“The F1 cars will have to be fitted with ERP IUs,” says the LTA’s Mr Boh. “This could be tricky, especially since they don’t have windscreens. Maybe motorcycle IUs would be more appropriate. These can be attached by drilling mounting holes into the cars’ beautiful bodywork, just like we do with motorcycles.
“Furthermore, I understand that a Formula One race traditionally takes place on Sunday afternoon, but there are no ERP charges on Sundays, so they’ll just have to change the race to Saturday. Otherwise, think of the lost potential revenue,” said a worried Mr Boh.“The race would be about 75 laps. We purposely planned the route to include an ERP gantry, because 22 cars going underneath 75 times equals a lot of money. We want that. And if some of the drivers forget to top up their cashcards in advance, think of the fines we can collect!”
Because the race will be run on public roads, the LTA also expects the teams to bid for COEs. “Unlike Malaysia, we won’t be missing the point of holding an F1 race, which is to collect revenue to build a world-class transport system. Sepang only benefits from tourism dollars, a global audience numbering in the billions and the cash injection into the construction industry when the track was built.”
However, TalkingCock.com understands that there are other potential concerns with holding a race here. “As you know, racing in Singapore illegal,” said Traffic Police Commissioner Mah Tah sternly in a phone interview. “The Traffic Police will not hesitate to issue a summons to any Formula One driver caught exceeding the speed limit here.”
Commissioner Mah also warned against illegal modifications to the cars. “During the race, we may set up road blocks and conduct routine checks for such illegal modifications as noisy exhaust pipes or large spoilers. We are also reviewing the proposed route to study appropriate locations for speed strips in order to slow the cars down in the corners.”
Asked how the Traffic Police officers could possibly hope to catch up to a 350km/h F1 car and order the driver to pull over, Commissioner Mah smugly replied: “That’s what speed cameras are for.”

major disappointment in floorball. my team narrowly lost out on promotion to div1 despite our best efforts. we played so well and had so much fun but it wasn't to be the ending we expected. but thanks lydia- for helping to take these GREAT shots of me, ahaaha!

lessons in school are either very boring or quite difficult already. if its an 'easy' subject, it tends to be so boring that i tend to not be able to pay attention then i fall behind and then the subject becomes not so easy. if its difficult subject, its so bloody hard even though i pay alot of attention and try my best to understand during lessons.
i think i like my car alot. even though its very old and it's rusty in places, and the radio doesn't work and the cd player works only when shruthi's around. its still relatively reliable. so i don't think i'll be getting a new car anytime before i graduate. if i had money, i'd try to pimp up my little car abit. at least i can appreciate what i have...even if its nothing much. i don't need a new or nicer car anytime soon. maybe i'll give it the wash that's long overdue.hehe.

After going out together all the time and watching movies and eating and walking around and eating and chilling together and eating(again), Shruthi and I decided to TRY and study together. I have decided to use my free day to head back to school and revise through the week's work. It's never too early to start studying i guess. Here we are, in the study room at my school. Not bad, we managed to get some work done. I took the occasional covert pic of Shruthi much to her dismay...Well, she finally decided to give me some face and posed for me by giving me a nice smile. Slurp.

Earlier in the day, she gave me a card because i'd been feeling down about some things. It made my day. And confirmed what i already knew...
She's absolutely lovely. Damn, wish this wasn't any mushier...

I love talking to Shruthi. We like talking about our childhood experiences. We seem to share very similar experiences of playing the same games and doing the same things as we grew up. I guess we're not that much different. We paid a visit to the neighbourhood where she grew up in(stopping to snap pcitures of unsuspecting Shruthi). Its called Jln Zamrut? Not as cool as Jln Kayu though. Haha. Nevertheless, its a pretty cool place. As we took a leisurely stroll around the area, Shruthi shared her childhood memories with me and i started recollecting my own-growing up with my Grandparents in first Macpherson, then in Yio Chu Kang. Jln Zamrut kind of reminds me of Mugliston Park, which is in Yio Chu Kang. I lived there in my Uncle's house with my Grandparents. I remember those times as if they happened just yesterday. Its a nice feeling thinking about childhood memories.

Anyway, MSM is like the most boring module ever. Though it shows promise of being a manageable and 'scorable' module. I have old faces with me in MSM. I hope there are many more old friends in the other modules so that i'll be less likely to cut classes this time around. Speaking of which, I can't afford to cut classes this year if i'm to be on track for my 2nd uppers. With a whole lot more effort, which is always easier said than done, I'm hoping I'll do better.

Nano...most of u know the footballer Nano. well i can say i know a portugese dude by the name of Nano. Him and his friend-they smell of smoke when they come back at 2am every night. they call me Mr...i'm like W. i wanna go out n chill with these dudes. see singapore thru their eyes. lets see- pubs, beer, expensive ciggies. what else do we have...hmm..

By the way, if you thought the French were really cultured and cool, with their berets and baguettes, think again. i had this really bad smelling French dude. who prob hadn't showered forever. and he made the bedsheet and blanket really smelly man. think i have to throw away the pillow he used.

by far, the coolest dude i've met is this South African dude who i sent to the Airport once. He is a frelance documentary maker. Before you think Richard Attenborough, wait- he covers adventure sports like mountain biking, bungee, whitewater rafting etc. Still, uber cool.

Koreans are very shy, and jitterishly timid. These 2 Korean girls were so reluctant to hand over their passports so that i could copy their particulars to check them in. and they were really cheapo cos they asked if the washing machine was for free use, of course it isn't its just $3 and they said ok. and the next day, they washed their clothes by hand and dried a gazillion wet clothes in their room with the air con at full blast. not cheapskate leh.

Oh and now i'm being insensitive. who cares.

And oh yeah, Akon stays here too. For quite long, he's into his 2nd week. i say Akon cos he seems pretty lonely.. and like sad and all. and he's Black so yeah. but he got a cool name though- Innocent. "hello..i'm Innocent" "sure you are dude." hehe.

We've had babes from like South Africa and Chile too. *simmer* once,this babe forgot to bring her clothes into the shower, so she came out all wrapped in a towel ONLY. I was reading my paper when i saw her prance past me,i was like "okkk.....nice..right"..but i always look super under dressed and tired so yeah-no chance lah. hehe

Anyway, anyone looking to joint venture to run a cafe in Lil India?: wait, dont roll your eyes, its already a BackPackers' haven so there's money to be made here. i'm thinking Beer, Seesha, Finger Food, Desserts, Live Football, Live performing Guest Bands(Adam etc). somehting for the Angmohs and my friends and friends of my friends. There might already be a location available. i lack the capital but i have the ideas and 'lobangs' to do the set up. anyone interested, call me or something..
